Café Design & Expansion
Pure Brew & Co. Gordon is a contemporary café located on a prominent corner opposite Gordon train station. The project brief was a significant expansion, transforming the existing 55m² space into a 165m² venue by integrating the adjacent tenancy. This expansion presented a series of technical and design challenges, including navigating a level difference between the two spaces and relocating core café functions. The client’s vision for Pure Brew & Co. Gordon was to create a warm, gallery-like atmosphere, a concept Studio PFA was entrusted to bring to life.

Navigating Compliance
Studio PFA provided partial architectural services, with a specific focus on the critical pre-design and documentation stages. This included a detailed site measure, feasibility study, and the preparation of the CDC building permit and tender documentation. Studio PFA expertly designed the space to meet all Food Premises design controls, building code requirements for the new accessible toilet, and the complex requirements for the new stair connection between the two tenancies, which was crucial for the successful expansion of Pure Brew & Co. Gordon.
Merging Hospitality and Art
The client’s passion for fine art was a central driver of the design. They envisioned a café that felt like an art gallery, which Studio PFA realized through careful material selection and bespoke design elements. The new space for Pure Brew & Co. Gordon features a palette of warm timber textures, white gallery-style walls, a sleek white stone coffee bar, and a polished concrete floor. This design language provides a clean and contemporary canvas, setting the stage for the client’s collection.
Functional Integration and Custom Features
A significant design feature was the new custom bench seating. This element was not only a functional component of the café but also served as a display system for artworks, complete with soft, illuminated lighting and track spotlights to mimic the atmosphere of a professional art gallery. By masterfully relocating the coffee bar and integrating a new stair connection to address the level difference, the expanded space for Pure Brew & Co. Gordon was seamlessly unified, creating a cohesive and well-defined flow for both staff and patrons.
