Studio PFA was engaged as the local architect and project manager to deliver the first Cartier boutique in an Australian airport. Situated within the prestigious SYD X luxury precinct at Terminal 1, this project required the translation of Cartier’s globally renowned design vision into a unique and highly secure aviation environment. Our role was to meticulously oversee every stage, ensuring the successful launch of the landmark Cartier Sydney International Airport boutique as a new pinnacle of travel retail.

Translating Global Vision into Local Reality
Our team provided comprehensive architectural services, developing the brand’s international concept to ensure compliance with Australia’s rigorous standards and airport-specific regulations. This involved creating bespoke design solutions to navigate local parameters, managing all planning and building permit approvals through the Airport Building Control (ABC), and integrating complex duty-free requirements. The successful execution of the Cartier Sydney International Airport project hinged on this detailed localisation process.
Engineering an Iconic Façade
A key challenge was the realisation of the boutique’s signature façade, featuring four soaring sails reaching over seven metres high. The existing floor structure presented significant loading limitations, posing a major structural hurdle. Through a collaborative, solution-driven approach with the builder and structural engineer, Studio PFA developed a bespoke solution that brought the ambitious design to life, establishing an iconic presence for the Cartier Sydney International Airport boutique.
Crafting a Bespoke Client Journey
Spanning over 200m2, the project’s scope was extensive. The space planning of the boutique was a multifaceted interior that included a luxurious front-of-house selling area, an exclusive VIP lounge, a dedicated bridal space, and distinct zones for jewellery, men’s and women’s collections, and accessories. The seamless integration of these spaces, along with back-of-house staff facilities and offices, was paramount to the sophisticated client journey at the Cartier Sydney International Airport.
